After leaving college, many people start saying that this is not the age to study. Many people continue their studies while working, while many women continue their studies after marriage or along with their children’s studies. But is it possible that someone’s studies are left in between and then they can complete their degree after decades? Yes, this has happened. A woman obtained her master’s degree at the age of 80 years and 105 years.
Virginia Ginny Hislop of America has earned her master’s degree from the Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE) after 80 years. She took the required classes at Stanford in the 1940s. She even completed her coursework, but just before submitting the final master’s thesis, World War II broke out, putting her degree course on hold.
With the outbreak of war, Ginny’s boyfriend George Hislop was called up to serve in the war. This caused Ginny Hislop to leave school to marry him. She eventually aided the war effort and focused on raising her family.

While moving on with her life with her family, which includes two children, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, Ginny Hislop also served on school and college boards in Washington state for decades. During this time, Stanford dropped its thesis requirement, and Ginny Hislop finally returned to school to graduate, walking across the stage to accept her Master of Arts in Education on Sunday, June 16.
When she was handed her diploma by GSE Dean Daniel Schwartz, Ginny Hislop said, “Oh my God, I’ve waited a long time for this.” Speaking to “Good Morning America” in an interview that aired Wednesday, Ginny Hislop explained how she had waited a long time to achieve this feat.
